Pride in the dark

Sure, Pride Week is all about being out and social and everything, but the last week of June can get fairly rainy and humid sometimes it’s just a good idea to take a break from all the mingling and take in a movie.

But what to see? How about a series of films programmed by culturally relevant artists? Wouldn’t that be swell?

All right, then. Get yourself down to the Bloor Cinema this week for the Queer View series, a selection of double- and triple-bills designed to resonate with Pride Week enthusiasts.

Sunday night, Bruce LaBruce pairs Windows and The Sergeant on Monday, Adamo Ruggiero presents C.R.A.Z.Y. and Andrew Harwood and Matt Thomas follow it with Hedwig And The Angry Inch.

For Tuesday, Guinevere Turner presents her own Go Fish, followed by Larry and Andy Wachowski’s enduring thriller Bound, and Thursday ramps up to the weekend with a tour-de-force triple bill of Gus Van Sant’s My Own Private Idaho presented by Todd Klinck, Paul Verhoeven’s Showgirls presented by Nina Arsenault and Stephan Elliot’s The Adventures Of Priscilla, Queen Of The Desert presented by Fay Slift.

Oh, and as long as we’re on the subject of gender confusion, the Bloor’s also screening D.A. Pennebaker’s landmark concert film Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars tonight (Friday) as part of its late-night “Live On 35mm” series. Witness the apex of David Bowie’s glam-rock phase … and don’t worry if you feel an odd stirring when the jumpsuited Bowie starts strutting in the middle of “Suffragette City”. It’s perfectly normal.

Tickets for the Queer View series are $10 per film, or $15 for double-bills, available at TicketWeb. Tickets for Ziggy Stardust are also $10, available here.
