Pusher

PUSHER (Luis Prieto). 89 minutes. Opens Friday (November 9). For venues and times, see Movies. Rating: NNN

Pusher is actually the second British remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s 1996 breakout Danish thriller about a mid-level coke dealer who finds himself on the hook to a vicious mobster a Hindi version was produced in 2010.

Richard Coyle takes on the role of the increasingly panicked anti-hero, and it’s a decent performance from an actor best known for providing comic relief on the Britcom Coupling. (Curiously, Coyle’s been styled to play up his resemblance to Andy Serkis, making one wonder how much more effective Serkis would have been in the role.) And Zlatko Buric reprises the role of Milo, the fatherly heavy he played in the first Pusher, which is a nice touch.

Much like the original, it’s all handheld cameras, crisp editing and pounding music. But as slick as director Luis Prieto makes the production, he never quite pulls it out from under Winding Refn’s shadow.
