A Shine Of Rainbows

A SHINE OF RAINBOWS(Vic Sarin). 100 minutes. Opens Friday (April 9). For venues and times, see Movies. Rating: NN

Tomás (John Bell), a meek and stammering eight-year-old orphan, is whisked away to an Irish island by a colourful fairy-godmother-like foster parent (Connie Nielsen). She coddles the child, while her husband (Aidan Quinn) has his reservations.

Cue cute, imaginative flights of fancy and piano music telling you when to cry. Bolstered by strong performances, Vic Sarin’s film is predictable but competent. That is, until a climactic deluge of strained action and artificial emotion capsizes the family melodrama. Radheyan Simonpillai
