Resident Evil: Extinction
(D: Russell Mulcahy, 95 min)
You've gotta hand it to Milla Jovovich. Of all the supermodels-turned-actors, she's had the most enjoyable big-screen career. How many can boast a resumé that includes Dazed And Confused, The Fifth Element and probably the most successful video-game-to-big-screen action franchises ever?
Jovovich is back in Resident Evil: Extinction (the second sequel, if you're counting), in which her gun-toting character, Alice, treks through the post-apocalyptic ruins of Las Vegas battling zombies, virus-laden monsters, corporate bigwigs and other baddies.
These films are big with the fanboys, so Ashanti and Heroes' Ali Larter are along for the ride.
(D: Joe Nussbaum, 90 min)
Amanda Bynes does the princess thing as Sydney White.
Fairy tales are suddenly hot properties again. In a couple of months comes Enchanted, a spin on the Cinderella story. But for now we've got Sydney White, which is basically Snow White in a college setting.
Sydney (Amanda Bynes), helped by her seven geeky friends, tries to fit in. Like, omigawd, will she live happily ever after? Duh.
Both open Friday (September 21). Screened after press time - see reviews September 21 at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
