Things We Lost In The Fire
(D: Susanne Bier, 112 min)
You know it's awards season when a film starring two Oscar winners and boasting an earnest and downbeat title like Things We Lost In The Fire comes out. Halle Berry stars as a recent widow who turns to her dead husband's ( David Duchovny ) friend ( Benicio Del Toro ), a recovering drug addict, for consolation.
The trailers show characters weeping over senseless urban violence, hugging and looking all serious and vulnerable. In other words: don't forget the kleenex, people.
(D: Tom Brady, 88 min)
Horror films got satirized in the Scary Movie franchise, and rom-coms got skewered, not so successfully, in Date Movie. Now comes The Comebacks , a comedy that attempts to spoof all those inspirational sports-movie clichés.
David Koechner (Anchorman) plays a down-on-his-luck football coach who gets another chance by helming a team of very familiar misfits. Let's see if it kicks off a successful franchise of its own.
Both films open Friday (October 19). Screened after press time - see review of Fire October 19 and The Comebacks on October 22 at http://www.nowtoronto.com/film.
