THE WEATHER MAN (D: Gore Verbinski, 110 min)
Nicolas Cage plays a perpetually bummed-out TV weatherman who finally gets a break when national morning show Hello America offers him an audition. But even that can't take his life out of the crapper, what with wife Hope Davis wanting a divorce and dad Michael Caine showing him not even a scintilla of respect and his kids getting into deeper shit by the day.
Cage has a way of making sad-sack characters engaging - he kept our interest as a jaded juicer in Leaving Las Vegas, for heaven's sake - and if all else fails we'll at least find out if Oscar-winner Caine (The Cider House Rules, Miss Congeniality) has finally figured out how to do an American accent. Opens Friday (October 28). Screened after press time - see review online October 27 at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
