Underworld: Evolution (D: Len Wiseman, 105 min
Once upon a time, Kate Beckinsale had a decent career in art house films like Cold Comfort Farm, Emma and The Last Days Of Disco. Then came those underwhelming studio films like Serendipity (bad), Van Helsing (worse) and Pearl Harbor (worst). She bounced back as a very glam Ava Gardner in The Aviator, but alas, she was overshadowed by Cate Blanchett, who won an Oscar as Katharine Hepburn. It's as a latex-wearing vampire warrior in 2003's Underworld that Beckinsale's reached her biggest audience. The sequel, again directed by her husband, Len Wiseman , sees Beckinsale reunited with Canada's own Scott Speedman as her love interest, the hybrid vampire/werewolf. Looks bloody good to us. Opens Friday (January 20). Screened after press time - see review January 20 at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
