Annapolis (D: Justin Lin, 108 min)
After Tristan & Isolde, James Franco is in serious danger of becoming the next Richard Gere, a guy with leading-man looks and B-actor depth.
Now comes Annapolis , which sounds like an update of Gere's own 1980s hit, An Officer And A Gentleman. Franco plays a guy from the wrong side of the tracks who tries to make good at the famous naval academy. Taking Lou Gossett Jr.'s place as his tough African-American nemesis is Tyrese Gibson .
Ripoffs -- or "homages" -- aside, this could work. The director is Justin Lin , who scored a Sundance hit with his promising Better Luck Tomorrow. And the script is by David Collard , who cranked out the Denzel Washington thriller Out Of Time a couple of years ago.
Big Momma's House 2 (D: John Whitesell, 99 min)
What can we say? If you were one of the millions who laughed over Martin Lawrence 's FBI agent donning matronly drag to take down some criminals in the 2000 original, I'm sure you can't wait for this.
One interesting fact: two then-unknowns, Paul Giamatti (Sideways) and Terrence Howard (Crash, Hustle & Flow), starred in the original. They're not here for the sequel. I wonder why.
Both open Friday (January 27). Screened after press time - see reviews January 27 at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
