Eight Below (D: Frank Marshall, 120 min)
Huskies could be this year's penguins. That's the advance word anyway on this Disney pic inspired by a real-life sled dog adventure.
Paul Walker and Jason Biggs play scientific explorers who are forced to leave their canines behind to survive in the Antarctic. The dogs must fend for themselves for six months.
One interesting note: director Frank Marshall helmed another icy survival pic, Alive, in 1993. That one, you'll remember, was about guys eating each other to stay alive. Let's hope for Rover's sake that this one has a less depressing ending.
Date Movie (D: Aaron Seltzer, 80 min)
Tired of romantic comedies? Then make a date for Date Movie , a parody of the rom-com genre. Looks promising, especially since two of the six twisted minds behind the Scary Movie franchise are involved. Perfect for a post-Valentine's Day reality check.
Both open Friday (February 17). Screened after press time - see reviews February 17 at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
