ANGRY INDIAN GODDESSES (Pan Nalin). 107 minutes. Opens Friday (August 26). Rating: NNN
Pan Nalins ensemble piece introduces five women, all of whom except the alpha female capitalist Su (Sandhya Mridul) are getting royally jerked around by sexists in the workplace. Soon theyve assembled to celebrate the nuptials of their friend Frieda (Sarah-Jane Dias), and the pic settles into a study of their relationships and personal struggles, at work and with one another.
This is a film so ambitious in terms of its intentions that it cant help but be all over the place. Nalins put way too much on his plate just about every womens issue and consequently, the personal connections are a little too vaguely drawn and the piece feels like it lacks an anchor.
But the dialogue is wholly believable, the exuberant opening sequence is stellar, and when Nalin goes outside the reunion venue, revealing the social realities that act as barriers to female empowerment, Angry Indian Goddesses packs a punch.
Keep an eye on him.
