mysterious skin (Gregg Araki, U.S.). 99 minutes. Friday (May 20), 9:45 pm. Isabel Bader. Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNNN
Mysterious Skin marks a startling leap to maturity for former queer punk provocateur Gregg Araki . Adapting another writer's material for the first time, Araki turns Scott Heim 's novel into a dreamscape that's as unsettling as it is erotic. Two eight-year-old boys have an encounter with a Little League coach that leaves one with memories of alien abduction and the other on the path to selling sex to older men. After the sharp shocks of Totally F***ed Up and The Doom Generation, Araki finds a strange grace in this story of sexual abuse. He does it by abandoning moral filters in favour of the unvarnished perspective of youthful eyes. Disturbing, and Araki's best film yet.
