Backcountry

BACKCOUNTRY (Adam Macdonald). 91 minutes. Rating: NNN

Watch online: iTunes

To escape the big city, a couple (Missy Peregrym, Jeff Roop) head off to an isolated weekend in Algonquin Park and encounter a little trouble when they venture too far into the wilderness.

The first hour of Adam Macdonald’s feature debut is a nicely drawn two-hander between Peregrym and Roop’s young lovers. She’s an unapologetic urbanite, he’s trying (maybe a little too hard) to show her a good time in an old camping spot, and their conflicting perspectives start to grate on each other.

But then a shift in tone throws all that fine character development out the window, and Backcountry turns into a pretty generic survival thriller that’s a lot less interesting than it was when it started out.
