BE LIKE OTHERS

BE LIKE OTHERS (Tanaz Eshaghian, Canada/Iran/UK/U.S.) 74 minutes. Subtitled. Monday (April 21), 7:15 pm, Isabel Bader April 24, 4:15 pm, Cumberland. Rating: NNN

In Toronto, we may get the difference between transsexual and queer and no longer fear that gays are seeking sex changes to avoid homophobia.

But it’s another world in Iran. Though homosexuality is illegal, sex changes are not and, according to Be Like Others, are encouraged to promote gender conformity.

In this straight-ahead, conventional doc, director Tanaz Eshaghian follows several sex-change candidates — all male-to-female — who discover life on the other side of a sex change isn’t rosy. A sad slice of gender fascism.
