BEDTIME STORIES (Adam Shankman). 99 minutes. Opens December 25. Rating: NNN
Bedtime Stories is an Adam Sandler comedy (groan) for kids (double groan). The funny thing is it's not bad at all.
Sure, it's a ridiculously fantastic story where tales about cowboys and space battles find peculiar ways of intruding on the real world. And sure, Sandler's maintenance man Skeeter is a variation of his Billy Madison archetype, spending much of the movie inventing silly voices and displaying as much maturity as the audience he aims to tickle.
Still, the movie comes to life because everyone involved is on the same page. Sandler's brand of humour should always be directed at children, and the charming and teacherly Keri Russell provides a nice foil as the romantic lead.
Hairspray director Adam Shankman delivers the visual oomph with a sparkling mix of live-action and animation, and a candy-coated aesthetic that both kids and their parents can get sweet on.
