Calgary coup

six figures (David Christensen). 108 minutes. Opens Friday (March 31). For venues and times, see Movie Listings. Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN

Director David Christensen ‘s confident feature debut is a compelling look at anger and secrets in families. Warner ( JR Bourne) is a father of two in his mid-30s, stuck in a dead-end job in boomtown Calgary. When his frustrated, ambitious wife, Claire ( Caroline Cave ), is bludgeoned, he becomes the prime suspect. Christensen, an experienced documentarian, keeps the frame wide, creating a sense of mystery and detachment. Oddly, this only enhances the work’s mystery and makes a key midpoint 360-degree tracking shot all the more powerful.Basic Instinct 2 The Genie Award-nominated script is lean and mean and the cast solid, and Bourne is especially effective as the man who’s trying to keep it all together with a nervous smile.
