Cinefranco review: Origami

ORIGAMI (Patrick Demers, Canada). 99 minutes. Screens Friday (October 5), 7 pm, at the Carlton (20 Carlton). 2018.cinefranco.com/en. Rating: NNN

This years festival opens with a small-scale time-travel drama starring Francois Arnaud as a Montreal art-restorer artist whose memory gaps are either the result of a psychotic break induced by a tragic loss or evidence that hes moving back and forth within his own timeline.

Whatevers causing it, director Patrick Demers (Jaloux) and screenwriters Andre Gilluni and Claude Lalonde are more interested in how the experience affects their hero from one moment to the next, and the charismatic Arnaud (Blindspot, The People Garden) does a fine job of holding the whole thing together, even as when it briefly flirts with turning into a bad remake of The Butterfly Effect.
