Confessions of a Porn Addict

CONFESSIONS OF A PORN ADDICT (Duncan Christie). 80 minutes. Opens Friday (December 5) at the Bloor. See Indie & Rep Film. Rating: NNN

I was looking forward to an orgy of sleazy gags. But no. Confessions Of A Porn Addict skips the obvious yuks and caricatures to let the very quiet humour emerge from its bizarre story. It may be the most straight-faced mockumentary ever made.

Thirtysomething loser Mark Tobias (Spencer Rice) struggles with his compulsive wanking and smut habit, then launches on a quest to reconnect with the ex-wife (Lindsey Connell) he still loves. Along the way, he’s helped and hindered by his filmmaking buddy (director Duncan Christie), his Porn Addicts Anonymous sponsor (Yuk Yuk’s Mark Breslin) and real-life porno producer Rob Black.

Rice and Breslin mope through the movie like chronic depression cases. This makes sense given what their characters are trying so hard not to do, but it’s not a lot of fun. Most of the film’s life comes from Black’s aggressive hustle and Connell’s perkiness.

If you don’t already know what porn looks like, you won’t find out here. Christie keeps the images mostly offscreen or blurred. Christie’s visuals are more pragmatic than playful and add a strange kick to the movie’s profoundly kinky finale.
