DADDY’S LOVE (Mette Aakerholm, Norway). 48 minutes. Subtitled. Monday (May 19), noon, ROM. Rating: NNN
Mette Aakerholm’s documentary about Kenneth, a 20-something single, gay Norwegian man who’s hired a married woman in Kansas to be the surrogate mother for his child, has all the makings of a gripping doc. Alas, Aakerholm’s reticence and a too-short running time leave many questions unanswered.
How much is Kenneth paying the mom? Why does Kenneth think his life “won’t start” until he has a child? What do the Kansas couple think of Kenneth’s sexual orientation – or the fact that he seems to be a heavy smoker?
Thankfully, the subjects, including Kenneth’s own supportive mom, who makes the trip to the U.S. with him, are fascinating people, and Aakerholm is present to capture many poignant and awkward moments about family life.
