DEFINITELY, MAYBE Written and directed by Adam Brooks, with Ryan Reynolds, Isla Fisher, Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks and Abigail Breslin. A Universal release. 105 minutes. Opens Thursday, February 14. Rating: NNN
Definitely, Maybe gooses the romantic comedy genre with a whiff of mystery and a When Harry Met Sally time scheme about how we end up with the people we love. Will (Ryan Reynolds) tells a long bedtime story to his precocious daughter (Abigail Breslin) about the identity of her mother.
Is it his Midwest sweetheart (Elizabeth Banks), the sharp-tongued magazine writer (Rachel Weisz) he meets in Manhattan or the flaky drifter (Isla Fisher) who temps at his office?
Reynolds exudes a wholesome comic charm, but it’s tough playing straight man to three smart, sexy women (Fisher’s the revelation here) and a cute Oscar-nominated child actor.
Still, every actor and location is so damned attractive that you ignore the plot holes and fall under the sappy Valentine’s Day spell.
