Did You Hear About The Morgans?

DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THE MORGANS? (Sony, 2009) D: Marc Lawrence, w/ Sarah Jessica Parker, Hugh Grant. Rating: N DVD package: NNNNN Rating: N

The commentary shared by stars Sarah Jessica Parker and Hugh Grant and director Marc Lawrence is a thousand times funnier than the movie.

[rssbreak]

They cut up their own work and each other’s and sound like they’re only half-joking, except for Grant, who sounds like he’s not joking at all. There’s more hilarity in the making-of segment on the problem of giggling actors, and a brilliant example of same in the outtakes reel.

A featherweight concoction based on the premise of hardcore New Yorkers hiding out in rural Wyoming and thereby revitalizing their marriage, the movie depends entirely on the charm of Parker and Grant. They haven’t any. Grant moves and speaks like an ill-programmed robot, while Parker seems to be reciting lines in a language she doesn’t understand.

By contrast, Sam Elliott and Mary Steenburgen look Oscar-worthy, turning in solid, low-key performances as the couple who shelter our heroes.

EXTRAS Commentary, three making-of docs, more. Widescreen. English, French audio and subtitles.
