DOOMSDAY Directed by Neil Marshall. 105 minutes. Opens Friday (March 14). Rating: NNN
DOOMSDAY is a high-energy, high-body-count science fiction actioner that almost qualifies as a classic for its story alone.
A lethal plague is about to hit London. Survivors have been seen in Scotland, sealed off for 30 years since the original outbreak. An embittered major (a suitably flinty Rhona Mitra) and her squad are sent in to bring back the cure. Graphic violence ensues, while back home, government slime gear up for the massive and so plausible betrayal that gives the movie its bitterly realistic punch.
Doomsday looks epic and moves fast, but writer/director Neil Marshall is so besotted with The Road Warrior that he doesn't even try to disguise the countless action gags he rips off. To his credit, he does it well, and he gives his mohawked heavies more vicious fun than the originals.
