Dull but true

Reviews : Red Without Blue

Here’s another important but plodding documentary from Nancy Nicol, this time tracking the political fight to get the Quebec National Assembly to pass the Civil Union Bill in 2002 giving full rights to gay and lesbian parents and their children.

The film starts with incendiary footage of Quebec police assaulting queer demonstrators in the early 80s and then descends into talking-heads mode, featuring the activists who pushed for the groundbreaking bill. Drama deepens when the minister of justice recounts how he was moved to action only when he heard from the children of gay parents.

The Chris Bearchell tribute is interesting only for the seconds of footage featuring the late activist at the bathhouse raid demos.

And please, someone help Nicol with her soundtracks. Cheese-o-rama.
