Fabulous Social satire

THE MOSTLY UNFABULOUS SOCIAL LIFE OF ETHAN GREEN (George Bamber, U.S.). 88 minutes. Opening gala Thursday (May 19), 8 pm. Isabel Bader. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Like the Eric Orner comic strip on which it’s based, The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life Of Ethan Green provides some wicked gay social satire with heart.

Twenty-six-year-old Ethan (a charming Daniel Letterle ) thinks he’s finally met his dream man: a former professional baseball player who’s recently come out. Ethan’s roommate friends have their doubts, as do the bears-in-drag Hat Sisters and Ethan’s gay-wedding-planner mom (Family Ties’ Meredith Baxter , looking great).

Shot on video with an obviously small but efficiently used budget, the cute fest opener cleverly sends up everything from Internet dating to gay Republicans. The most savage satire targets same-sex commitment ceremonies, with a joke about the song MacArthur Park that goes on a teensy bit too long.
