Fog’s clarity

The Fog Of War: Eleven Lessons From The Life Of Robert S. McNamara. (Errol Morris) Rating: NNNN

Rating: NNNN

This documentary is drawn from more than 20 hours of interviews with Robert S. McNamara, architect of the incendiary bombing of Japan in the second world war, secretary of defence under presidents Kennedy and Johnson and head of the World Bank from 1968 to 81. It’s a film in which the personal intersects with the world-historical moment. McNamara is startlingly sharp given his age, which makes it easy for him to dance sideways around questions about the setting of policy during the war in Vietnam.

A remarkable document.
