BREAKFAST WITH SCOT (Laurie Lynd). 90 minutes. Opens Friday (November 16). Rating: NNN
Take the standard fish-out-of-water story about a wayward orphan stuck with new parents – a staple from Anne Of Green Gables to Webster – and make everybody gay. That’s the starting point of this offbeat family drama.
It stars Tom Cavanagh and Ben Shenkman as the two new dads of a carol-singing, boa-wearing 11-year-old boy (Noah Bernett).
That Cavanagh plays a closeted ex-Maple Leafs henchman is a bit of a stretch for TV’s amiable Ed, although the jock aspect does add another layer of drama to a story that could easily have been movie-of-the-week fare.
Instead, it’s an occasionally funny, sometimes touching story with at least one standout performance, by newcomer Bernett.
