GET SMART (D: Peter Segal, 110 min) Rating: NNN
Get Smart delivers plenty of chuckles and a few laugh-out-loud moments through a combination of good comic acting, slapstick and verbal humour. The cone of silence, the shoe phone and most of the other classic gags from the original 60s sitcom are back, as is the plot. Once again, secret agents Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) and Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) battle the forces of Kaos, who are hell-bent on world domination via nuclear blackmail.
Carell does a good Smart, childish, rigid and always thinking, but strangely, not the complete idiot of the series, merely a fish out of water, a change that will matter only to die-hard fans of the original.
Carell and Hathaway, smart and sexy as 99, have good chemistry and more than enough energy to carry the movie over its occasional clumsy moments.
