Gifted Riffing

Rating: NNNNN

This is basically a vehicle for Eddie Murphy and Owen Wilson to riff comically while saving the world from evil arms dealer Malcolm McDowell. Directed by Betty Thomas (The Brady Bunch Movie), it’s less contemporary action movie than old-fashioned Hope-Crosby Road picture, with Wilson as a mild-mannered CIA operative and Murphy as an arrogant boxing champion who continually refers to himself in the third person. The narrative’s a ramshackle mess, and the whole picture hangs on the personalities of the stars. If you find them funny — and I found Murphy hilarious here — you’ll enjoy the picture. 95 minutes.
