Heroic Huffman

Transamerica (Duncan Tucker). 103 minutes. Opens Friday (December 23). For venues and times, see Movie Listings. Rating: NNN Rating: NNNNN

Transamerica is an acting triumph for Felicity Huffman , who plays Bree, a pre-op transsexual on the verge of becoming a woman.

She gets a call from Toby ( Kevin Zegers ), a son she unkowingly fathered during college, and on orders from her shrink, bails him out of jail in New York and takes him back to L.A. with her.

Writer/director Duncan Tucker has an ear for dialogue, even if some of it isn’t his (a line about veganism is lifted straight from The Simpsons), and an eye for talent, as his choice of leading lady proves.

Huffman has deepened her voice and mastered the walk of a man who hasn’t quite mastered the walk of a woman. She and her character show great courage, but the film itself is less brave, raising transgender issues but never truly diving into them.
