FORBIDDEN LIES (Anna Broinowski, Australia). 107 minutes. Wednesday (April 25), 7 pm; April 27, 1:30 pm, Isabel Bader. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
Norma Khouri, author of Forbidden Love (not to be confused with the excellent Canadian documentary of the same name), talks about her bestselling account of the honour killing of her best friend in Jordan.
But, as Anna Broinowki's film unreels, we begin to wonder whether Khouri's for real. The more incredulous we become, the more intensely Khouri sticks to her story.
Though Forbidden Lies starts out as the story of a hoax exposed, it turns into a film about what kind of woman could get caught up in this kind of situation. We get the key bit of (some would say obvious) info in the last five minutes, which is a little late and weakens the narrative.
Regardless, it's a sad ending to an intriguing story.
