This is an unvarnished portrait of life in a nursing home as seen through the eyes of Gert, a 101-year-old resident who's been living in one for nearly two decades. She manages to survive and even stay relatively happy in spite of a daily round of minor torments, including having to share a room with a dementia patient who won't let her sleep.
Kastner's adept at piling up the small, telling details. In the end, we've got a pretty good sense of both the institution and what makes Gert tick.
What's her secret? Playing the ponies, it would seem, and being by all accounts a bit of a battle-axe. Good to know.
