JAN DARA (Nonzee Nimibutr) Rating: NNN
Jan Dara demonstrates definitively that hysterical, overwrought soap operas can come from every corner of the world. Set in 1930s Thailand, it's the story of a young man who grows up in the emotionally and sexually overheated environment of his father's house, enduring his father's hatred while knowing everybody in the house is having sex all the time. The picture is exquisitely shot (cinematography by Nattawut Kitikhun) and the acting is an odd blend of the professionally assured (Hong Kong singer/actor Christy Chung, for example) and the rawly amateur, but the mix, unexpectedly, works. 120 minutes.
