I’ll See You In My Dreams assembles some very fine performers and gives them almost nothing to do. It’s aimed at the people who flock to those Best Exotic Marigold Hotel movies but want an even less challenging narrative.

Blythe Danner stars as Carol Petersen, a California retiree whose comfortable routine is shaken up when her dog dies. Emotionally adrift, she makes an unexpected emotional connection with her pool cleaner (Martin Starr), and a more physical one with a fellow retiree (Sam Elliott).

That’s basically it. Director/co-writer Brett Haley ambles through a string of familiar story beats without ever really telling us what we’re supposed to get out of them. Should we worry that Carol drinks more or less constantly, for example, or was that just so Danner had something to do in every scene?

It’s great to see Danner in a leading role. In her 70s, she remains a gifted and emotionally volatile actor. She deserves a movie that’s willing to make the most of that. 96 minutes
