movie you’ll ever see. Zoe Beloff adopts a deliberately obscure, difficult technical process to tell the tale of Elizabeth d’Espérance, a Victorian woman who channelled spirits with scandalous appetites. Beloff goes Guy Maddin one better, inventing a cinematic language somewhere between silent melodrama and the occult. Shadow Land’s flat voice-over is the weakest part of this film, but the startling images more than make up for it. Watching this film is like discovering a new Georges Méliès, one he never dared show.
