InAPPropriate Comedy

INAPPROPRIATE COMEDY (Vince Offer). 83 minutes. Opens Friday (March 22). See listings. Rating: N

If you found Movie 43 not unbearable enough, don’t worry. InAPPropriate Comedy proves that rock bottom is within reach. That round of laugh-free sketches came from the occasionally funny Peter Farrelly and an all-star cast who should have known better, while this one was directed by ShamWow spokesman Vince Offer and stars Rob Schneider and Lindsay Lohan. Everyone involved succeeds in offending the audience, but not by breaking taboos. Nope, viewers will be shocked that this thing got released.

The movie is structured around Offer selecting scenes through apps on a tablet – sketches involving Lohan shooting paparazzi, Schneider reviewing porn based on how much semen his co-host produces, and Oscar-winner Adrien Brody playing a renegade cop named Flirty Harry who cracks gay puns in pink pants.

Even worse are the Blackass (a play on Jackass) sketches involving a mix of ethnic stereotypes and coat-hanger abortions.

Production values are low, the acting level lower. And the writing is puerile and infantile there’s nothing wrong with that, of course, provided some thought, or even originality, is involved in the bad behaviour. Unfortunately, these sketches rarely even have punchlines or structure. It’s like seeing the jokes scribbled on a middle school bathroom stall enacted by embarrassed actors who assumed the movie would never be released. Whoops!

The few subversive segments come from Ari Shaffir, who revives his viral comedy hit The Amazing Racist in ludicrously offensive stunts like offering free boat trips back to Africa. Shaffir actually understands shock comedy. Alas, Offer replaces Shaffir’s unsuspecting candid co-stars with actors, and the laughs disappear.
