Metallica: Some Kind of Monster directed by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky. 140 minutes. Wednesday (April 28), 9 pm. Bloor. Rating: NN Rating: NN
This is a silly two and a half hours tracking mid-life metal gods Metallica in group therapy. Their bass player has quit, they haven't made an album in six years and they're all turning 40, so they hire a therapist and spend hours each week making "I feel" statements. They seem like nice enough guys, and fans will thrill to the cameo appearance by drummer Lars Ulrich's elfin yet passive-aggressive dad and the emotional session where Ulrich confronts embittered original guitarist Dave Mustaine. However, non-fans will, against their kinder impulses, be reminded of Spinal Tap and laugh uncontrollably until they feel a little bit bad about themselves.
