Director Andrea Meyerson‘s uninspired approach to documentary filmmaking (When did you come out? What was your worst set ever?) almost kills the laughs in this look at the lives of four prominent lesbian stand-ups (Rene Hicks, Sabrina Matthews, Vickie Shaw and our own Elvira Kurt). Meyerson juxtaposes performance footage from the quartet’s appearance in a Long Beach theatre with a forced series of chats with them lounging on a sofa, and then more intimate one-on-ones.
Kurt emerges as the funniest by far, both in her stand-up sequences (talk about physicality, range and clarity) and in those sometimes awkward group chats. There are lots of adorable photos of each comic, and their personal stories are engaging, even if Meyerson never draws a link between their lives and their humour.
