Love and Savagery

LOVE AND SAVAGERY (John N. Smith). 95 minutes. Opens Friday (November 13). For venues, times, and trailers, see Movies. Rating: NN

A tale of forbidden love in 1969 Ireland, Love And Savagery is sorely lacking in both.[rssbreak]

The melodramatic tale of a Canadian backpacker (Allan Hawco) who makes the mistake of wooing an Irish lass (Sarah Greene) in a tiny coastal town, it sets up and plays out its predictable conflict without showing a single spark of life.

The film expects us to swoon at the sight of forbidden love against the crashing waves, and to hiss reflexively at the callous Catholicism that corrupts souls and ruins lives through its institutional cruelty and harsh judgments.

I’d be happy to oblige, if Smith had bothered to provide any reason to do so.
