orange county (Jake Kasdan) is populated by Hollywood progeny. Director Kasdan is Lawrence Kasdan’s son, star Colin Hanks is Tom Hanks’s scion, and female lead Schuyler Fisk is Sissy Spacek’s daughter. Hanks stars as California surfer dude Shaun Brumder, who stumbles on a novel by English professor Marcus Skinner. Shaun decides to change his ways and become a writer and sets out to gain admission to Stanford, where he can attend Skinner’s classes. Problem is, he doesn’t get accepted, so he and his stoner brother (Jack Black) go off on a quest to plead his case. Written by Mike White, the writer/star of disturbing indie hit Chuck & Buck, Orange County looks more sophisticated than most teen comedies. White has a knack for creating empathetic, oddball characters who follow their own logic. Look for Black (High Fidelity, Shallow Hal) to make the most of White’s script and the opportunity to play against the likes of comedic heavy hitters Catherine O’Hara, Lily Tomlin, John Lithgow and Garry Marshall. 91 minutes.
