MAKING TROUBLE (Rachel Talbot, U.S.). 85 minutes. May 8, 1 pm, Bloor. Rating: NNNN
Jewish people are funny, right? Making Trouble demonstrates that Jewish women are particularly ballsy.
The film focuses on six influential funny Americans: Molly Picon, Fanny Brice, Sophie Tucker, Joan Rivers, Wendy Wasserstein and Gilda Radner. All of them are outrageous, and none meet the conventional standards of beauty.
In between archival clips, contemporary funny women talk about Jewishness and laughter while snacking at a New York deli – too bad we don’t see any of their work – and women like actor Tovah Feldshuh and writer Anne Beatts weigh in.
Big fun, and worth it just to see what Rivers was doing – and how she looked – before she became the red-carpet slut and cosmetic surgery wreaked its havoc.
