MENSCH (Steve Suissa, France). 87 minutes. Subtitled. Sunday (April 18), 1:15 pm, Al Green Theatre. Rating: NNN
There’s not much Judaic content in writer/director Steve Suissa’s slick French crime drama about a safecracker (Nicolas Cazalé) whose latest job comes with some uncomfortably personal entanglements.[rssbreak]
Cazalé’s sullen protagonist regards himself as only culturally Jewish, but the tensions between his black-sheep character and his disapproving family offer an interesting look at the way ethnic identity can inform everything about a person’s psychology.
It’s an unusual subtext to consider while the movie cycles through its standard One Last Heist plot line.
