NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS

NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS Jon Turteltaub, runs 124 minutes Rating: NN

NATIONAL TREASURE: BOOK OF SECRETS improves slightly on the first entry in the series. It’s a bit more aware of its own corniness and there’s a little more action, but this is still Indiana Jones for nerds. The sequel finds treasure hunter Ben Gates (Nicolas Cage) searching for a lost city of gold in order to prove that his great-grandfather did not conspire to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. Bonus ridiculousness: the hunt involves a raid on Buckingham Palace and the kidnapping of an oddly complicit U.S. president. Gates and his posse get around every obstacle with only the slightest difficulty, and the complete lack of tension means that the only wow factor comes from wondering, “What is Helen Mirren doing in this dreck?”
