LAST CALL AT THE GLADSTONE HOTEL (Derreck Roemer, Neil Graham, Canada). 65 minutes. Sunday (April 22), 6:30 pm; April 28, 4:15 pm, Bloor. Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
The debate over the gentrification of Parkdale gets a human face in Maryanne, a long-time pay-by-the-day resident of the Gladstone before its rebirth as a see-and-be-seen destination for gritty glitterati. When new management takes over building, her locks are changed and she's out.
Although biased in favour of the long-term staff and clientele, the film fairly points out that the previous owners had let the building fall into ruin, and that Maryanne, for one, was causing a health hazard in her room full of garbage and roaches. A bare-bones elegy for a below-the-radar class of Torontonians, Last Call At The Gladstone tells a story that's fallen through the gaps in the media's celebration of this renovation success story.
