The NIGHTOWLS OF COVENTRY (Laura Paglin). 75 minutes. Opens Friday (October 28). For venues and times, see Movie Listings. Rating: NNN
This cinematic time capsule explores changing times in the 70s in Coventry, a quiet Jewish neighbourhood in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, that's suddenly inundated with bikers, hippies and incipient yuppies. Nostalgia buffs will enjoy real-life photos of the old 'hood. But the story of a randy, gambling owner of a deli (the only game in town open late) who freely hits on waitresses and avoids the bills is not for everyone. Though the pacing is slo-o-o-w, if you enjoy character pieces you'll get a kick out of long-time customers Benny ( Allan Pinsker ) and Morty ( Bernard Canepari ), who come every day to hear themselves talk, yet never can because they're too busy interrupting.
