GOOD BOY!

(John Robert Hoffman) does such a great job illustrating the bond between dogs and their owners, it could reform even Cruella De Vil. Liam Aiken plays Owen, a lonely kid and pooch enthusiast who accidentally gets Dr. Doolittled and learns his beloved new pet is really space dog K-942, sent to earth to ensure canine domination. SNL where-are-they-nows Molly Shannon and Kevin Nealon are Owen’s folks, who inexplicably move from one house to another and are thus too busy renovating to notice their child’s painfully obvious suffering. Young’uns will eat this up, but parents and older kids all know where this is going. Oh, and dogs will fart. A lot. 90 min. NNN (Lori Fireman) Opens Oct 10 at 401 & Morningside, Canada Square, Coliseum Mississauga, Colossus, Courtney Park 16, Eglinton Town Centre, Elgin Mills, First Markham Place, Grande – Steeles, Kennedy Commons, Queensway, Rainbow Fairview, Rainbow Market Square, Rainbow Promenade, Rainbow Woodbine, SilverCity Mississauga, SilverCity Newmarket, SilverCity North York, SilverCity Richmond Hill, SilverCity Yorkdale.

THE STATION AGENT

(Thomas McCarthy) features small person Fin (Peter Dinklage), who is fascinated by trains. They mirror his own approach to life – getting from point A to point B on an orderly route that’s reliably the same each day. This film about the unscheduled stops and destinations life can impose thrusts solitary Fin into the lives of Olivia (Patricia Clarkson), a recently separated artist, and endearingly annoying Joe (Bobby Cannavale). Winner of Sundance’s audience choice, outstanding performance (for the deeply deserving Clarkson) and screenwriting awards, The Station Agent sounds like a politically incorrect joke (a midget, a loud-mouthed Cuban guy and a redhead) but is instead a profound and beautifully realized portrait of friendship and inexplicable connection, with characters who are instantly believable despite their oddities. Kudos to McCarthy for giving Dinklage a substantial role, making his dwarfism neither novelty nor a Mini Me punchline. See cover interview, page 72. NNNN (Lori Fireman) Cumberland
