Organ grinders

THE LIMB SALESMAN (Anais Granofsky). 80 minutes. Opens Friday (April 28). For venues and times, see Movie Listings. Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Former Degrassi Jr. High star Anais Granofsky sets her feature film in a grim future where clean water is a rare and precious commodity, birth defects are common and the black market organ trade is booming.

Dr. Gabriel Goode ( Peter Stebbings ), a limb-replacement surgeon, is summoned by Abe Fielder ( Clark Johnson ), a water baron whose daughter ( Ingrid Veninger ) needs a new pair of artificially regenerated legs. Love and conflict ensue.

The film looks gorgeous, the rich, decayed setting is appealing, and the plot’s dystopian accoutrements are intriguing. But the central relationships are pure movie-of-the-week, complete with variations on the incest and suicide themes that seem to have been a TIFF admission requirement for Canadian dramas when the film played there back in 2004. Needs to be weirder.
