Rebound (directed by Steve Carr, 103 min)

If you want to widen your audience base, make a comedy with kids. It worked for Vin Diesel, and it’s kept Eddie Murphy pumping out product for years.

Martin Lawrence is obviously hoping for the same payoff. He plays a star college basketball coach who loses it one day on the court and finds himself helming a high school team full of awkward misfits.

Along with the kids – most of whom seem to be cast for their offbeat looks – there’s Will & Grace’s Megan Mullally as the school principal and SNL’s Horatio Sanz as an assistant coach/home ec teacher. Director Steve Carr could probably do this blindfolded. He’s responsible for Murphy’s Daddy Day Care and Doctor Dolittle 2. Let’s hope Rebound doesn’t dribble.

Opens Friday (July 1). For venues and times, see Movies, page 105. Screened after press time. See review Friday (June 30) at www.nowtoronto.com/film.
