RIVER OF NO RETURN (D: Darlene Johnson, Australia). 52 minutes. Some subtitles. Wednesday (October 15), 7 pm, Bloor Cinema. Rating: NN
ImagineNATIVE's opening-night gala is an ungainly documentary about Frances Daingangan, a 45-year-old Australian Aboriginal woman whose dreams of being an actor - and, more importantly, a movie star like her idol Marilyn Monroe - are briefly validated when she lands a role in Rolf de Heer's Ten Canoes.
Director Darlene Johnson offers interesting glimpses of Daingangan's life, but she never sticks with any one idea for more than a few minutes, and the result feels frustratingly diffuse.
