Gay sports leagues are nothing new, but this doc about a novice gay rugby team in a straight New York City league makes for fascinating, gripping viewing. Even if you think rugby is a ridiculously violent sport.
The ragtag Gotham Knights include a gruff ex-marine, a 5-foot-5 NYU senior and a hilarious African-American editor who’s also an aspiring stand-up comic. We watch as these guys, under a patient but increasingly exasperated coach, try to score a single point against the more experienced straight teams.
What emerges isn’t just an exciting sports film but also an engaging, moving look at friendship, pride and courage. Even the closing credits are filled with drama.
