What do you get when you cross Swingers with Singles, add a touch of The Wedding Singer and Almost Famous and a liberal dose of far lousier dialogue and tuneage? You get Undiscovered , a feature-length music video that poses the nagging question, can Ashlee Simpson act better than she can sing? (Answer: no).
Luke ( Steven Strait ), the singer, and Brier ( Pell James ), the world's shortest model, meet cute in New York and hook up again in L.A. as part of a group of struggling artists. Brier and Clea (Simpson) start an Internet buzz about Luke with the help of Brier's aunt and agent ( Carrie Fisher ). Surprise! Once Luke's popularity rises, he loses sight of himself, crashes and burns, blah, blah, blah. Director Meiert Avis may have a kickin' rep on VH1, but hand-held cinematography and "atmosphere" can't compensate for a storyline that dates back to The Wall, at least.
The plot functions solely as something on which to hang the songs, none of which is terribly good and too many of which feature Simpson on vocals and ohdeargodmakeitstopplease! Ahem. The only thing you can say about Ashlee is that she's not as ubiquitous as sister Jessica -- but, girls, please. How can we miss you if you won't go away?
