S&M: SHORT AND MALE (D: Howard Goldberg, Canada). 86 minutes. April 24, 7 pm, Royal; April 27, 1:45 pm, Isabel Bader. Rating: NNN
Tired of being rejected by women and undervalued by society, director Howard Goldberg examines the long and short of being short. He discovers some eye-popping facts about income (a man's salary jumps $1,000/year with each inch in height). Crossing the pond, he finds that things are much different in France, where Napoleon casts a long shadow and the country's new leader, Nicolas Sarkozy, is only 5-foot-4.
We get references to pop culture, and a visit to a Beverly Hills shop frequented by famous short guys (Dustin Hoffman, Jason Alexander) is fun, but Goldberg also looks at painful height-enhancing surgery. An illuminating trip to China shows how, because of globalization, companies are beginning to discriminate on the basis of height in their hiring practices. Now, that's low.
